: My dad's cousin John Harrington (Mass.) flew with the Mighty Eighth and was killed towards the end of the War. I'm looking for any leads/info to find out more about him, to rekindle the family awareness of Johhny.
Hi W.P.
In "Ted's Travelling Circus" I found Lt John F. Harrington was the co-pilot of 42-51253 RE V of the 93rd BG, 329th Squadron on 17 Jan 1945 when it failed to return due to flak and was interned in Sweden. Harrington was injured fatally by flak and was buried in Sweden and his body was returned to Boston in 1948. He was the only loss from the 12 man crew. The MACR 11742 is available by contacting Lynn.Gamma@MAXWELL.AF.MIL free of charge. There is a picture of the Harry Gruener crew on page 444 of this reference.
This crew was also badly hit on a mission over France and thought to be lost but it was later learned that they had landed on a recently liberated fighter strip and returned to duty intact. At the time they were attached to the 330th squadron and were on their 15th mission and scheduled to become a lead crew on their 16th mission. They were later transferred to the 329th squadron.
I can give you the crew list if you wish and also scan the picture. Contact me by email if you wish.
