Ladies and Gentlemen, my father, Alvin J. Patterson, 351st Bomb Group of the Eight Airforce(Polbrook, England, 1942-1944) passed away last week at 87. I wanted to provide his obituary including his service with the Eighth Airforce, 351st Bomb Group in England. Could you please add my father's information to your web site as appropriate.

Alvin Joseph “Pat” Patterson October 09, 2007

Alvin Joseph “Pat” Patterson passed on October 9, 2007 he was 87 years old and resided at The Laurels in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Mr. Patterson is a native of Hendersonville, NC where he was born on January 20, 1920 to the late Alex and Bess Patterson. He is also preceded in his death by his sister Harriett Forgang.

A long time resident of Brevard, Mr. Patterson and his late wife Martha Choate were partners in a successful retail shoe business and managed Pat’s Shoe Mart in Brevard for over 35 years.

Mr. Patterson was educated at Hendersonville High School and later attended the Georgia Military Academy.

He was a Veteran of the United States Army Air Corp where he served in World War II with the US Eighth Air Force based at Peterborough, England. He taught Link Flight Training to U.S. B 17 Pilots. During his tour of duty in England (1942-1944) he was billeted in the town of Polbrook.

Mr. Patterson returned to Brevard following the war and in 1956 he married Martha Choate of Asheville, herself a World War II veteran and Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. She was a public health nurse and later joined Mr. Patterson as his partner in the shoe business. Mr. Patterson was a community leader, active in the Democratic Party, The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks. He campaigned for and, later, attended the Inauguration of the late President John Fitzgerald Kennedy in 1960. Mr. Patterson was also a Director of First Citizens Bank in Brevard.

Survivors include his two sons, Michael of Summerville, SC and Marion of New York City, NY.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at 12 noon at Brevard Davidson River Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Keith Thompson officiating. Family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. A private burial will be held at Gillespie-Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that any donations be made to The Veterans of Foreign Wars in the community of choice.
