Hi Kevin and Karen,
Good Choice to give Karen as far as places to visit around Cambridge. Bassingbourn is the "Savoy" of air bases. Much of the Runway, hardtands, firing butts, perimeter track is all there. The buildings are the same as when the 91st held court there in 1942 and the Tower is a well preserved museum. "Wray's Ragged Irregulars" Kevin, I think DG is a bit farther than an hour from Cambridge. Remember, those roads are a bit tricky. Well worth the visit. Many building left in and around the field along with murals on the walls. I have only scratched the surface at that base as far as remaining buildings but they are there and do suggest you get a guide to take you. Makes it much easier to find things. The Memorial is right next to the main runway and there is much perimeter track and sections of the runway still there. If you are going to travel the A-11, you may want to stop at Eveden Hall (home of 3rd Air Division HQ during WW2). There is nothing more memorible than going to these airbases and touching a piece of history. Remember to grab a piece of the Runway for a Paper weight!
