: : I am looking for history on what happend to Lt Bryant's crew on 8 June 1944. He was with the 388th BG and lost his life with his crew on 8 June 1944 which was a mission on bombing Tours, France. The B-17 was "GI Jane" but this is conflicting because she had a final flight date of 8 Sept 1944. Can anyone shed some light on this and what happend? Thank you

2nd Lt. Clyde (NMI) Bryant, Pilot, is listed as KIA on 8 June 1944, 388th BG. There is no MACR, as it appears they were returning from a Mission when they crashed with only the Pilot being killed. When the aircraft crashed under certain circumstances, no MACR was required. There is a chance there will be an Accident Report.
: The MACR database doesn't show the 388th BG losing any planes on 8 June 1944. Project Bits and Pieces shows a number of men KIA on that date but it is not a normal crew. There are two pilots listed and also 2 BT gunners. It is possible that these men were KIA but the plane(s) were not lost. They could have been from more than one plane and killed by enemy fire or flak. There is no plane listed in my reference. "G.I. Jane" was lost on 28 Sept 1944 according to the MACR database. Possible that Lt Bryant could have been flying that plane when he died and some of the other men as well but the plane returned to base. Maybe you can get some information by logging on to www.armyairforces.com/dbgroups.asp?Group=209. This will put you on their forum where you can post your query. Look for a post about Association, Website and Reunions (possibly the first post) and look for the contacts with the group that may be of assistance.

To keep down KIA lists, in the 9th AF, if the aircraft made an attempt to land after a mission and failed and then it made a second, or more attempts to land, ending in a crash and one or more people were killed, those deaths were accounted for as Accidental Death. It may be the 8th carried the crash as an accident and still allowed the KIA accounting.
Check the Air Force Historical Research Agency for an Accident Report to account for his death.
