According to Roger Freeman,"The Mighty Eighth" some of the markings would depend upon the time period. He says,"From late 1944 red and yellow band forming chevron on the wing with red toward tip. Late January 1945 wingtips and complete tail less elevators painted yellow. During last two months of war, many 839 and 837 BS planes had colored cowls and chin turrets. OTHER SQUADRONS NOT KNOWN TO HAVE USED ANY COLORED MARKINGS."
