: My grandfather was a pilot in the 844th bomb squadron, 489th bomb group. I'm looking for any information I can find. His name was 2nd LT. Sidney Lewis. My mother gave me a picture of him in front of his plane with his crew and I would be thrilled if I could find someone from his crew or anyone that knew him.
Hi AJ,
2Lt Sidney D. Lewis was the pilot of 42-51283 4R M
on 6 Oct 1944 when it failed to return due to flak and crashed at Harburg, Germany. The MACR 9751 is available free of charge by contacting Lynn.Gamma@MAXWELL.AF.MIL. Expect a wait of several weeks to receive the copy.
Crew list:
2Lt Sidney D. Lewis (P) POW Chenango Falls, NY
2Lt Francis J. Fitzgibbon (CP) POW Syracuse, NY
2Lt John M. Short (N) POW Milford, CT
2Lt Francis J. Daino Jr (B) POW Bronx, NY
S/Sgt Jack T. Snead (NT) KIA Owensboro, KY
Sgt Paul A. McNickle (TT) POW Cleveland, OH
Sgt Harold F Defenbaugh (RO) POW Fergus Falls, MN
Sgt Raymond D. Carlson (BT) POW Webster, SD
Sgt James P. Curry (WG) POW Jamaica Plains, MA
Sgt David H. Godair (TG) POW Glencoe, MO
Several of these names are fairly uncommon and a whitepages.com search might prove fruitful. You can also check with the 489th BG to see if they are active members of the association or if they have any information about their status or whereabouts. You can post on their forum by going to www.armyairforces.com/dbgroups.asp?Group=299. If you will look for a post about Association, Website and Reunions (maybe the top post)you should find some association contacts and links that might prove helpful. Good luck.
