Jean and others,

From the Mortuary Affairs Center I received this information some years ago..

'The acronym, MARIO, is translated Missing Aircraft Research Investigation Office. The office was comprised of 15 teams staffed, exclusively, with U.S. Air Corps personnel. The teams provided technical expertise in interpreting reports of air operations, identifying a particular type of aircraft, and describing specific items of equipment carried by those aircraft.

The expertise represented by these teams was critical to Graves Registration (GR) operations involving the search for and identification of the remains of Air Corps airmen. It was not unusual to find MARIO teams accompanying GR teams in the more difficult searches for isolated remains of airmen. '
