I'm not a veteran but I have researched a three incidents where Allied fliers were repatriated back to the States by the Red Cross. All three of the cases I have researched were due to major medical problems resulting from combat wounds. The Germsns were not willing to provide long-term medical care for our wounded boys. The injured men in my three cases were taken to the Swiss border by the Red Cross and following a very brief internment there, were allowed to continue on to Allied medical facilities in Africa, Italy and one to England early in the war.

Was this a common practice? I believe it was for a very minor few who were so gravely wounded the Germsn did not wish to provide long-term care for them.
