From internet sources, "STANINE" is a test scoring method, the term being a contraction of :standard nines." Here is one explanation of it:

"Stanines are single numbers to represent a percentile position 1-9. 1-3 is below level, 4-6 is in the middle, and 7-9 represents the higher end of the curve. A student who's percentile rank is 50 will have a stanine of 5. Stanines are used as an easier means of categorizing students."

I don't know which particular tests that flight candidates took that were scored this way. I noted some references to Navy tests scored in this way during WWII, but nothing on AAF.

: I have learned that aviation cadets were tested several ways, mentally and physicaly to determint suitability for that service and also to place them is the field as Pilot, Naviagator, or Bombardier. I also learned that a system called "stanine testing" was used. Can someone please explain what that was and how it was used to distinguish who would be selected for what aviation job, P, N, or B?? I'm really courious and would greatly appreciate the information.
