I would like to share a story regarding a recent discovery involving former WWII Allied POWs in Germany.

I found a site describing the hospital located in Thuringia, Germany. Please access:

I learned of the hospital in the records of a deceased former POW, Major, United States Air Force Reserve. His widow asked for my assistance with the process of obtaining recognition for the wounds experienced during crash landing of the Major’s aircraft 7 June 1944. He also experienced wounds while a POW.

The United States recognizes military personnel wounded or killed by the enemy with awarding of the Purple Heart Medal. Since he was wounded during two different situations, I applied for the Purple Heart, and Purple Heart, First Oak Leaf Cluster. (Meaning two Purple Hearts).

Unfortunately, the only records revealing wounds are his Veterans Administration records when he applied for, and received disability for his wounds during the crash landing, and not military personnel/medical records. However, information annotated by the Major on a VA form reveals he was a patient at the hospital identified above.

I contacted the American Consulate, Berlin with very little response. I was however, able to contact a gentleman in Germany that was kind enough to inquire with officials in the two towns where/near the former hospital is located. The Achieves revealed no medical records. He was advised to inquire in Berlin.

That leads me to my purpose. I am asking for assistance by anyone interested in determining if there are records stored in Berlin. Perhaps if one resides in England, they may contact the British Consulate, or locate a former patient of the hospital to share information leading to an answer.

If medical records are located, it would affect hundreds, if not thousands of veterans/family members since many records were destroyed in the fire at St. Louis, Missouri during 1973.

Currently, the request was denied by the Board of Correction of Military Records to recognize wounds received during the crash landing in France.

I would appreciate assistance in this matter.
