Only thing I can think of is he was flying with a 10 man crew and was killed staying with the plane so the others could bail. Their plane was involved in a mid-air with 43-38675 and crash landed near Florennes, Bel. 9 were returned. Erwin is buried in Plot B, Row 44, Grave 11. he was awarded an Air Medal with 2 OLCs
