On this date in 1781, General Cornwallis surrendered his army to the forces commanded by General Washington, at Yorktown, Virginia. This established the United States of America as an independent sovereign nation. This was done with the help of our French allies and others.
Since then, the USA has been a beacon of freedom for the world. We have aided former allies and foes alike in throwing off the bonds of oppression.
All of us - not just we "Americans" - should continue to spread the blessings of sweet freedom throughout the world, so that people everywhere can live as they wish, in peace and with dignity, free of oppression and want.
