The fictional 918th BG was arrived at by multiplying 306 (for the 306th BG) by three. I think most of the flying scenes that were not actual combat footage were shot in Alabama.
If I remember correctly from an old Air Classics article,the famous belly landing scene was flown by Paul Mantz who was killed in the filming of the original Flight of the Phoenix.
