Russ, good morning,
It is possible that the P-38 pilot himself
minutes later was shot down ( by the other
Fw 190? ) and so he could not report his aerial
victory.
There were 6 P-38 losses that day (364 FG -> 4,
367 FG -> 1, 370 FG -> 1; by comparison with the
MACR's ).
Perhaps we will never know what really happened.
...but the FW190 is still in the ground.
Wish you a good Sunday
Günter
: Günter ,
: Only the 20th FG, 55th FG and the 364th FG flew combat missions in P-38's, on the 19th May 1944, with the 8th Air Force.
: The only Claims made by any of these groups on that day were the following 364th FG claims:
: Lt. J. Kerr FW-190 dam Travemunde A/F
: Lt. K.F. Nicholson FW-190 dam Lubeck Bay
: But these locations are on the Baltic Sea coast.
: Sorry, but I'm not convinced the P-38 was an 8th AAF bird...the 9th AAF had 264 fighters up on the 19th and were credited with claims of 4-0-6 in aerial combat. Apologies but I don't know which FG had which claim in the 9th.
