Ten years ago, I contacted Roger Freeman about a wrong name that he had in his books, concerning the name of the B-17 that Lt.'s Gott and Metzger, Jr. were aboard the day they were killed, 9 November, 1944, 729th BS(H), 452nd BG(H). Both were later awarded the Congressional Medal Of Honor on GO38, 16 May, 1945, for their actions on the day of their death.
I honor his memory, but today I finally located the person the bomber was named after and the correct name of the bomber is either Lady Jeannette or Lady Jeanette. The name of the bomber came from its Pilot's newly born niece, spelling her name Janette. However, at this time, there is no proof that the name painted on the bomber was spelled with one or two 'n.' All communications of the time, had two 'n's. One flight jacket sold on EBay, had only one 'n.'
Input from anyone with picture showing the bomber with its painted name, or real proof of the spelling of the name on the aircraft would be greatly appreciated by myself and the person for whom the B-7 was named. Please do not reply that Mr. Freeman's book is right, that has been disproved for so long, such arguments are wasted time for all of us.
What ever spelling was actually on the bomber, Mr. Freeman's name, Lady Janet, for the B-17G-35VE, Sn: 42-997904 is incorrect and should be corrected where ever that information is located.
