Quite often, crew pictures were taken in the states at a training base before being shipped overseas. In such cases, the large numbers on the nose had no correlation to the serial number of the aircraft. It was strictly a training base ID number. This was especially true of B-24 units. I would suggest that you get the pilot's name from the photo and compare it to the crew lists on the 492nd's website. Then contact some one with the 492nd Association. They can probably help you find the missions that your father flew, etc. Good Luck.
