I assume that you are referring to the famous photo of a B17 without its tail section going down. This is B-17G 42-37781 "Silver Dollar" of the 384th Bomb Group, which was lost on March 9, 1944. (Photo a.o. in Freeman's Mighty Eight h on page 115). 8 of the 10 men crew of Lt Merlin H. Reed were killed in action.
The aircraft was probably hit by a bomb from another B-17 in the formation.
