: Lets remember this Memorial Day the 938 men who lost their lives in the 96th Bomb Group in World War Two. Especially I would like to remember Lt. Robert Lyle, Pilot---Lt. Roger Kellog, Navigator-----S/Sgt. Walter Kozlowski, Top Turret Gunner---- who were all killed in a crash at the home base on July 29, 1944. The Radio Operator with this crew in the crash.
I would like to remind everyone of the real meaning of this day and to give thanks and prayers for those who sacrificed for our freedom. Here in Savannah, GA, the public schools remain open. I usually allow my children the day off, but they have final exams so I will have to send them his year. I am originally a Northerner, but I understand that the non-closure of the public schools on Memorial Day has something to do with some anachronistic grudge involving the Civil War, of all things. If anyone would like to, they can write to the local paper and try to rationally explain to the locals here that Memorial Day is larger than any regional hard feelings and that it is actually a slight to those who died for a cause much larger and more important. The editor here is Tom Barton. The URL is : http://www.savannahnow.com. There is a link for letters to the editor. Maybe a diverse geographic outpouring can help change some small minds.
Thanks to those, and their families, who have made us free today.
