: Rosie was with the 100th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 418th Bomb Squadron, based at Thorpe Abbotts,Diss, Norfolk, England, during the war, and flew 52 missions -- more than any other 100th crew. He is a legacy to the men of the 100th and to many others, like me, who have read and researched the war. Most kids my age had baseball or football heros; mine were men like Gabby Gabreski, Hub Zimeke, Don Blakeslee, Robert Morgan and Rosie Rosenthal! Many books have included his exploits and he has a real following.
:
: Rosie flew 52 missions, more than he had to, flew all missions, not just the milk runs, and flew with a broken arm one time. He was one of the most dedicated pilots of the 8th AF. He was detained by the Russians on the first Shuttle Mission to Poltavia and how he got back is what legends are made of. Not only that, Rosie was and is one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet. Last I heard he is still alive and living in California. In the next year, I hope to go out and meet him face to face.
: The 100th lost 12 a/c over Munster on 10 October 1943, and Rosie's crew was the only one to return!!!! FROM AND ENTIRE GROUP!!! Can you imagine!
: Rosie is an Eighth Air Force legend. Thank God we had men like him, Bucky Cleaven and Bucky Egan on our side. Free men everywhere owe them a debt of gratitude!
