Pay for flying echelon officers and noncoms

My father used to say that between his base pay as a lieutenant, overseas duty pay, and combat pay, he made what was then considered to be a very good pay. Can anyone tell me how much it was, approximately, and what part of it was base, overseas, and combat?

Also - and this may seem like a tiny detail but it's important to me - if an airman sent his pay home, exactly how did he do it? And was it possible to send some home and keep some?
