: : Warmest greetings!
: : I have just received this photo from a kind and generous friend in Belgium and I need some assistance identifying (more specifically, confirming) the airplane in the image.
: : The assumption is that the airplane is the B-17G "Punchboard" (42-39974) of the 452nd BG after she was forced down in Verloese Denmark.
: : With proper contrast and brightness adjustment the tail number is visible but obscured. The squadron marking on the right wing does not appear to be a "square L" as I would expect on this airplane but it is barely discernible.
: : I am not knowledgeable enough about the differences between a G-model and other models to look at it from this angle and make a determination. Unfortunately the absence or presence of a chin turret cannot be seen.
: : The location surrounding the bomber is strongly consistent with other known images that I have of the bomber at this point in time.
: : I would be most grateful if anyone could reply or email me if you have any conclusions to draw from this photo.
: : My humble thanks,
: : Bill Freeman

: Bill,
: PhotoShopping the photograph, comes up with no tail marking, but the same on the wing, it appears to be an "H" and not an 'L"
: As Finn keeps up on the unit marking, I am not certain there was White Square 'H,' so I am forwarding the very cropped PhotoShopped photo to him for that determination.
Square-H is 388th BG out of Knettishall.
